The Professionalisation of Social Education in Spain
A Sociological Perspective
Keywords:
social education, sociology of professions, professionalisation, professional identityAbstract
This article analyses the complex and uneven process of professionalisation of Social Education in Spain from the perspective of the sociology of professions. Despite its consolidation as a field of practice, Social Education continues to face significant challenges, including conceptual ambiguity, professional encroachment and processes of proletarianisation. Drawing on sociological frameworks, the study examines the criteria that define a profession, the stages involved in professional development, and the factors influencing social recognition. This analysis raises critical questions regarding the professional status of Social Education: whether it can be considered a fully established profession, a semiprofession, or a field undergoing deprofessional-isation. The article argues that a deeper understanding of these dynamics is essential for strengthening professional identity and advancing the discipline.
